What is rabbit skin glue?

This is used as a sizing for canvases. It can also operate as an adhesive. It may be used in a similar fashion to gesso, in order to prepare the canvas for painting. An added benefit is that it will dry in a transparent manner. Many people also enjoy this supply because it naturally tightens the canvas as it dries.

Is rabbit skin glue really created from rabbits?

Yes, it is created from refined rabbit collagen. Many people may have a problem with this on ethical grounds. Synthetic alternatives have been created. However, many people feel that they do not perform so well. Of course, it is not necessary for oil painters to use rabbit skin glue at all for their canvases.

What's the difference between side stapling, back stapling, and spline canvas?

Some canvases may be attached to a stretcher via staples on the side. These will need to be covered by a frame for hanging. Staples on the back offer an alternative which would not necessitate the use of a frame. Finally, a spline canvas provides the same option of back staples, however the use of channel fastening allows this option to lay flatter against the wall.
