Canvas

Canvas has supplanted wooden panels when it comes to the most common surface for painting. Wooden panels are known to have been used in Ancient Greece and Rome. The use of canvas is dated to around the early 1400s.

When used for painting, canvas is generally stretched around a wooden frame. This frame is known as a stretcher. Before being used with oils, it must be covered with a ground such as gesso. Acrylics can be applied straight onto the canvas much more safely, however.

Canvas was originally created from linen. Today, cotton has become more popular of an option. This is because it is more affordable. However, many serious traditional oil painters today will prefer to utilize linen.
